Play Word Blast online for free and take on a word puzzle that rewards lateral thinking over raw vocabulary. Word Blast lays out a grid of words and asks you to find the hidden connections between them.
Word Blast is an engaging word puzzle designed to sharpen your thinking, widen your vocabulary and give you a satisfying few minutes of pattern hunting.
It plays in any browser, and dedicated mobile apps offer daily challenges and extra modes for players who want more than one round a day.
What is Word Blast?
Word Blast gives you sixteen words and tells you they belong to four groups of four. It does not tell you what the groups are. Your job is to work out the connections and submit each group before your lives run out.
The difficulty is deliberate misdirection: several words will look like they belong to an obvious category, and usually at least one of them belongs somewhere else entirely.
How Word Blast works
Select four words you believe share a theme and submit them. A correct group locks in and its theme is revealed. A wrong group costs you one life, and you get four.
The colour key
Solved – the group is correct and its theme is revealed.
One away – three of your four are right — swap one and try again.
Wrong – the group is incorrect and costs you a life.
How to play Word Blast step by step
Read all sixteen first
Do not submit anything on your first pass. Read every word and note which ones could plausibly sit in more than one group.
Find the group you are certain of
There is usually one connection that is unambiguous. Clear it first to shrink the board from sixteen words to twelve.
Distrust the obvious category
If five words look like colours, one of them belongs elsewhere. The overlap is the puzzle.
Use 'one away' properly
Being told you are one away is a real clue. Change the word you were least sure about, not the one you like least.
Leave the vaguest group for last
Once three groups are locked, the fourth is solved for you — even if you never work out why.

Tips and strategies for Word Blast
Look for word types, not topics
Groups are often 'words that can precede CAKE' or 'homophones of numbers' rather than simple categories.
Count the plausible members
If you can list five candidates for one theme, you have not found the theme yet.
Say each word aloud
Sound-based connections — homophones, hidden words, silent letters — rarely reveal themselves on the page.
Spend a life deliberately
If two arrangements are equally likely and you have lives in hand, testing is better than stalling.
Reset your assumption
When nothing fits, the group you already 'solved' in your head is usually the wrong one.

Frequently asked questions
How do you play Word Blast?
You are shown sixteen words that belong to four hidden groups of four. Select four words that share a connection and submit them. Four wrong guesses ends the round.
How many mistakes can you make?
Four. Each incorrect group costs one life, so it is worth clearing the group you are most confident about first.
Is Word Blast free?
Yes. Word Blast is free to play in your browser, and mobile apps are available on the major stores.
What does 'one away' mean?
It means three of the four words you submitted belong together. Swap the one you were least certain about and try again.
Is Word Blast good for children?
Yes. It is non-violent, ad-supported at most, and the connections often make it a good game to solve together as a family.
Conclusion
Word Blast rewards a different muscle from the guessing games: not vocabulary, but the ability to notice that four unrelated-looking words share one quiet property.
When you want the comfort of a fixed rule set again, the daily Waffle Game board is waiting with its six words and fifteen moves.
